April Birthstone - Diamond

Did you know? The birthstone for those born in April is one of the most lusted after gemstones - the diamond. This beautifully shiny stone is actually one of the strongest materials on earth, rating with a score of 10 on the Mohs Hardness Scale. Diamond jewellery makes a great gift for a loved one who is celebrating their birthday in April, or in fact at any time of the year, as it can be cherished for many years to come.

What is the meaning of birthstones?

Everyone has heard of birthstones by now, they are a stone associated with a person’s birth month and are said to possess similar qualities to the personality of that very person. Tradition says that anyone wearing their birthstone will benefit from protection and good luck. That is why giving your loved ones a piece of jewellery adorned with their birthstone has become so popular.

Where do diamonds get their name?

The name originally derives from the Greek word “adamas” which roughly translates to mean invincible. As diamonds pretty much are invincible we think the translation of this term fits the gemstone pretty accurately. In fact diamonds are known for their remarkable strength and are around 58 times harder than other minerals on Earth.

What do they symbolise?

Diamonds are a symbol of strength, courage and resilience and have been a prized possession for centuries. Most typically seen on engagement rings, diamonds have been a symbol of everlasting love for a very long time with the Roman’s originally believing that Cupid’s arrow was tipped with diamonds.

Famous celebrities born in April?

Emma Watson, Jennifer Garner, Paul Rudd, Kate Hudson and James McAvoy are just some of the star-studded names that were born in April. Those born in April are thought to be optimistic and bright in character.

Are there any iconic movies with diamonds?

Plenty! You will probably be familiar with the song “diamonds are a girl’s best friend” which was performed in the iconic film Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, by Marilyn Monroe. Then there was the infamous sapphire and diamond heart necklace featured in the Titanic and how can we forget Audrey Hepburn’s iconic, extravagant pearl and diamond necklace in Breakfast at Tiffany's?
