The cut of a diamond should not be confused with its shape. Shapes are cut from the original rough diamond and whatever the shape, a well-cut diamond will always be able to reflect light better.

Cut Is About Proportions

The brilliance (light return), fire (dispersion of light) and scintillation (sparkle) are hugely dependent on the cut of the diamond. It is the only aspect that is directly influenced by man. When a diamond is cut to the right proportions, light is reflected from one facet to another and then dispersed through the top of the stone.

How Are Cut Grades Assigned?

Diamond cut grades are assigned as per the diamond cut grades established by the Gemological Institute of America. They are only provided for Round shapes. Diamonds assigned ideal, excellent or very good cut grades are considered well cut. Other cuts that prevail are good, fair or poor cut.

Size/Weight of diamonds

Cut has more effect on sparkle in higher carat weight compare to lower.

Shape Choice

For superior brilliance, choose a diamond with a Cut grade of Good or better for round diamonds, and very Good or better in fancy shape diamonds. Cut of the diamond also affect the size of the diamond. Mainly princess shape diamond can very more in size from lower to higher cut grade.

How Light Passes Through The Diamond

Types of diamond cut:

Ideal or Excellent Cut

A very rare and excellent quality diamond. Diamonds with ideal or excellent cut reflect almost all the light that enters.
Very Good Cut

The light reflected is nearly the same when compared to ideal or excellent cut diamonds, but attracts a lower price.
Good Cut

Good cut reflects most of the light that enters. Such diamonds are available at a lower cost and thereby make it a

more affordable option compared to ideal or very good cut diamonds.
Fair Cut

A fair cut diamond typically reflects a small portion of light. This cut is still considered to be a better quality of diamond. These

diamonds have been cut to maximise the carat weight over most other considerations and are therefore better value for money.
Poor Cut

This diamond cut is generally a diamond that has been cut too deep or too shallow. When this occurs the

diamond will lose significant amounts of light. A major benefit of this type of diamond is the price. A diamond that is a

poor cut will be significantly lower inprice than any other diamond cut grade.
